Keeping the kids entertained these holidays

Jan 24, 2020 | Raising Children

School has been out for a while and the kids are home, which means that it’s time to enjoy the Summer holidays together as a family. With this compiled list of ways to keep the kids entertained these holidays, avoiding boredom has become easier than ever. All of these activities are affordable and require little to no cost, making them attainable to achieve. If you have been going house-bound crazy, then try out some of these ideas to get you through this last week.

  • Parks
There are so many parks in Australia – right to the point where it would be a waste to not take advantage of them! Going to a park is the kind of activity that the whole family can enjoy, especially when there is play equipment to keep the little ones entertained. Other things to do could include going for a scenic walk, having a picnic lunch or meeting up with other friends. Why not see how many parks you can visit in your local area these holidays!
  • Become a tourist for the day
If you’ve lived in the same area for quite a while, it can be a challenge to find new things to do which remain exciting. Maybe you’re stuck repeating the same things over and over again and you can tell the kids are tired of it as well. So, why not become a tourist for the day? Find a map online of your local area, and find a few things on there that you’ve never seen/done before. Ideas could include visiting a museum, trying out a new cuisine or finding a pretty lookout. There’s a chance that you’ll discover some things that you didn’t even know about!
  • Visit a library
A visit to the library is something exciting and is sure to keep the kids entertained. Signing up for a library card allows you to borrow books for a short period of time, which comes with no cost at all. This is an excellent way for the kids to learn something new, practice their reading skills and understand the responsibility that comes with borrowing/returning books. It is also an excellent way for children to learn more about themselves, as it is an opportunity for them to discover potential hobbies and interests that they may have.
  • Cook something
Cooking with your kids does not have to be stressful… it can be a super fun activity! Getting your children involved with the process of preparing food teaches a lot about responsibility, and they will most likely feel valued to be a part of that. There are many positive outcomes that can come from being involved in the kitchen, particularly building up healthy food habits. It does not have to be anything fancy, but just ensure that you are directly supervising your kids to maximise safety at all times.
  • Maybe it’s raining outside, or maybe you’re just too busy to take the kids out to do something exciting. Either way, putting on a movie every now and then can be a great way to relax and learn about something new. There are many movies and documentaries that are not only engaging but are perfect tools to promote education. It can be as simple as renting from a movie hire facility, loaning from the library or borrowing from a friend. The perfect way to fill in what would have been described as a “boring” day! To make this even more exciting, get some large cardboard boxes that you put pillows in and your kids have their very own fun way to watch the movie.
  • Swimming
The Summer heat can be a bit intense at times, so the perfect way to combat that is by going for a swim. As long as you are able to supervise your kids at all time, a visit to the pool or the beach will always be appreciated. This can also be used as an opportunity to teach your children about water safety, as well as how to be sun smart. Slip, slop, slap and dive on in!
  • Gardening
Whether you’re a bit of a green thumb, or don’t know a single thing about gardening, getting the kids in the garden can be a fun and positive experience. If you have the space outside you could start a vegetable patch, or if you’re lacking the area you could plant some seeds into some pots kept indoors. Great satisfaction can come from successfully growing something from scratch, and the kids will love that, especially if they’re apart of the process right from the beginning.

As you can see, there are so many ways to keep the kids entertained throughout the holidays. Boredom does not have to be an option, as long as you’re prepared and equipped for entertainment. Look forward to the most exciting holidays for your kids yet!
